Basu was born in New Delhi, India, in a Bengali family. She is the second of three daughters of her parents, the oldest being Bidisha, and younger-Vijayeta. Although born in New Delhi, her family later moved to Kolkata.
She had done the modeling and quality quite by accident, because they had originally planned to study medicine. Basu studied science till 12 Kanoria Vidya Mandir Bhavan standard Gangabux and later, trade Bhawanipur Gujarati Education Society College, an undergraduate college affiliated to Calcutta University. Basu made her film debut in Abbas Mustan Ajnabee with Akshay Kumar, Bobby Deol and Kareena Kapoor. She played a married woman who has everything to seduce her husband's married friend, and eventually won the Filmfare Best Male Debut Award for his performance.
In 2002, Basu Takkar Donga Telugu movie superstar Mahesh Babu opposite Raaz and Vikram Bhatt's thriller Tollywood. Raaz was a huge commercial success and has emerged as the biggest success of this year. For her performance in the film, she received her first nomination for Best Actress at the Filmfare. A study published in The Tribune noted: "... it is Bipasha Basu who steals the show with his fine performance." It appears as Sonia Khanna in 2003 hit movie fetish and current boyfriend John Abraham. The film earned him a Filmfare Best Villain nomination Award.nominatie.
